But before you embark in the reading of "Your Heart Needs the Mediterranean Diet", Learn How Mediterraneans Have Kept a Healthy Heart for Centuries, let me warn you about something that may take you by surprise in my book: taking care of your health and your heart doesn't mean deprivation and sacrifices.
Let's face it; most diets are boring, unappealing and easy to quit and your hair probably stands on end at the thought of starting another diet. But this book is not about another dreadful diet; it is not about going through life depriving yourself of everything that is tasty or enjoyble.
This book is about a lifestyle, the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle which through centuries has proven that you can have delicious meals and a good time while enjoying excellent health. That's what people in the Mediterranean countries do all the time: they enjoy life and good food and they are renowned for being some of the healthiest people on earth as well as for having one of the lowest incidence of heart attacks, strokes, cancer, and diabetes. And they are much thinner than people in the United States. Being born and raised in Spain, I can attest to it.
And that's exactly the message I wanted to convey to all of you when I wrote the book: that including moderate physical activity in your life and spending quality time with your family, friends and co-workers while savoring a hearty Mediterranean meal, leads to good health. Research has confirmed it.
You don't need to move to a Mediterranean country to put in your life a Mediterranean way of life, although you are very welcome to visit my country of origin, Spain. You can start by following many of the lifestyle principles I advocate in my book right away; they are the ones Mediterraneans have followed for centuries and they have served them well.
